2G to 3G in-building coverage migration path
The paper describes the operator alternatives when moving
from 2G in-building deployment to 3G in-building deployment.
90% of existing deployments inside buildings are for 2G
systems and only 10% are for 3G deployments. New deployments are 90% for 3G and
10% for 2G. This is the 2G–to–3G migration path that most GSM cellular
operators are dealing with today.
When the operator would like to migrate from 2G to 3G there
are two choices, to replace the all in-building system with an active one, or
to use the existing passive Distributed Antenna System (DAS) while adding the
3G signal to the one point signal source.
The Active system is a more costly solution. However, the
existing solution doesn’t support remote diagnostics.
In the world of 3G, quality of service inside buildings is
as critical to wireless revenue as network performance on the open road.
Therefore, remote diagnostics inside buildings are vital for cellular
operators.
